Virginia Tech’s Enology Extension program in the Food Science Department assists Virginia winegrowers to improve the quality of Virginia wines. The Enology group includes Dr. Molly Kelly, Enology Extension Specialist and Dr. Amanda Stewart, Assistant Professor. The Enology Services Laboratory at Virginia Tech is TTB certified to perform wine, beer and juice analysis. Chemists Ken Hurley and Ann Sandbrook provide analytical services to wineries nationwide and assist in extension efforts.
Through workshops, roundtable discussions, electronic newsletters, and winery visits, the Enology Extension Specialist Molly Kelly instructs winemakers in areas such as sanitation, filtration, preparation for harvest, and laboratory analysis of wine and juice. Research projects focus on vineyard practices related to wine grape quality and processing issues. In collaboration with Viticulture extension at the Winchester AREC, a series of workshops on berry sensory assessment and several collaborative IPM workshops have been offered.
