Research

The Department of Food Science and Technology offers students the opportunity to participate in research projects during their undergraduate years at Virginia Tech. Suitable research projects may be designed to include specific areas that a student is interested in as well as research that is currently being conducted by a faculty member.  Participation in a research project enables students to gain knowledge about emerging food science areas and gain expertise with the latest technology. The experience also provides students with a competitive advantage for entrance into the job market or graduate school while providing feedback on whether research should be an important part of future career choices.

Students interested in undergraduate research can contact Dr. Bill Eigel, the academic coordinator, for a list of faculty and their research interests. Students should review the list of current research that is taking place, meet with the professor conducting the research, and then choose their area of study. Many faculty also list their research on their faculty web page.
