Researcher in Sensory Evaluation Lab

Our Facility

The Virginia Tech Sensory Evaluation Laboratory (VT SEL) is a state-of-the-art research space designed to support high-quality sensory and consumer science. Located in the Human and Agricultural Biosciences Building 1 (HABB1), the lab provides a controlled environment for conducting both academic and industry-sponsored sensory studies.

Key Features

  • Individual Sensory Booths: The lab includes 10 isolated booths equipped with LED lighting, ventilation, and computerized data collection terminals. These booths ensure unbiased, distraction-free evaluation of food and beverage samples.

  • Test Kitchen: A fully equipped preparation area allows for precise sample handling and temperature control, ensuring consistency and safety in every study.

  • Focus Group Room: A dedicated space for qualitative research, including moderated discussions, product feedback sessions, and consumer panels.

  • Data Collection & Analysis Tools: The lab uses industry-standard software for sensory data collection and statistical analysis, supporting both descriptive and consumer testing methodologies.

Research Capabilities

The VT SEL supports a wide range of sensory and consumer research, including:

  • Discrimination and descriptive analysis

  • Consumer preference and acceptance testing

  • Product benchmarking and reformulation studies

  • Packaging and labeling evaluations

Designed for Collaboration

The facility is used by faculty, graduate students, and undergraduate researchers in the Department of Food Science & Technology and partners with industry clients to conduct confidential product testing and development.

Meet the Team

The Virginia Tech Sensory Evaluation Laboratory is powered by a dedicated team of faculty, staff, and students who are passionate about advancing sensory and consumer science. Together, we conduct research that informs product development, enhances food quality, and deepens our understanding of human perception.

Faculty Leadership

Our faculty members bring expertise in sensory science, food chemistry, consumer behavior, and product development. They lead research projects, mentor students, and collaborate with industry partners to solve real-world challenges.

Faculty Support

Student Researchers

Graduate and undergraduate students play a vital role in the lab’s research activities. They assist with study design, sample preparation, data collection, and analysis. Many students also conduct independent research projects as part of their academic programs.

Students involved in the lab gain:

  • Hands-on experience in sensory testing

  • Training in data analysis and research methods

  • Opportunities to present at conferences and publish findings

  • Exposure to industry collaborations and career pathways
